Good skin care is great, but your nutrition and supplementation is ESSENTIAL. Ok? So go and read part 1 first. 😉
I’ll be honest, my skin care routine is pretty lazy and haphazard at best. I tend to veer towards more natural products as I hate the idea of my skin soaking up a stack of chemicals all the time (especially since some are hormone disrupting which defeats the whole point of these two blog posts!).
I just find my skin is better with a less is more approach. Fragrances and huge amounts of ingredients tend to exacerbate any inflammation in my skin, and I had a horrible rash from a super expensive moisturiser years ago which has just put me off in general!
I do love a good face mask once or twice a week, but otherwise, I really like to keep it simple.
I should point out that I do use more products other than these four listed below, but only intermittently and nothing that I can’t say has been a strong player in reducing my skin breakouts.
These four skin care products are my ride or die, breakout-proof beauties that I just can’t live without.
Natural Skin Care Protocol for Acne
01 Lerosett Spot Treatment and Facial Mask
I discovered this magical clay after seeing it on The Skinny Confidential – and guys, this stuff is worth one hundred times it’s weight in gold. Legit.
First up, the clay is not just any old clay. I was skeptical of this until I used it and trust me, you’ll notice the difference.
“… is a proprietarily heat-treated and micronized mineral rich ionic clay of finer particles that goes deeper into the pore. It is literally magnetic, it attaches itself to dead skin cells, even those on the follicle wall where most pimples clogs come from. High zinc levels and other healing minerals minimize oil production and dramatically increase healing.”
I’ve used other clay masks, and sure they are nice, but they are not magical like this stuff.
How to use:
I use this in two ways.
- As a spot treatment as soon as I see a pimple popping up it’s nasty little head. After washing my face, I use a cotton tip to dab on a thick layer over the pimple, and leave it on overnight. Yes all night! The next morning the pimple is either practically gone, or well on it’s way to healing.
- As a t-zone mask. I don’t do this often as it’s pretty drying and intense, plus I prefer to save it up for the spot treatment.
So if you get ONE thing off this list, get this mask. It’s a total game changer.
02 Tinkle Razor
Ok so girls, don’t freak out, but it’s time to consider shaving your face. YES. Shaving. Your. Face.
Now that we’ve just got that out there, let’s get into the nitty gritty of why face shaving is not just for the guys.
Kate Somerville (facialist to many Hollywood stars and celebrities) recommends it to all her clients, and apparently Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Cleopatra ALL shaved their faces.
We’re not just talking about removing that peach fuzz and facial hair, the real secret to face shaving is it’s an amazing exfoliation. Plus your make up will go on so much better, your products will absorb better and I find my complexion overall is so much clearer.
I don’t have a massively hairy face and my hair is blonde, but I’ve tried waxing (ow), threading (OW!) and hair removal creams (ugh chemical overload) – and honestly, I hate them all. I will tolerate a bit of waxing for my brows, but only every few months.
Note: I started doing this only when my skin was starting to clear up – obviously, if you have breakouts, it’s tricky to shave around them. You can do it, but be super careful as you don’t want to exacerbate any blemishes.
Let’s do the rest in Q & A (because I already know what you’re wanting to ask!) –
- Does it hurt? Or am I going to slice my face open? No and no! I’m the most uncoordinated, accident prone person ever, and I have still not managed to slit my throat with a Tinkle razor. You would have to apply some serious pressure and hold it at totally the wrong angle to do this. I actually find the sensation really pleasant, like I can feel how good it’s exfoliating my skin.
- Does it grow back thicker and darker? Nope, mine totally has not. None of your hair does actually – when you shave your legs, the hair is already thicker, so cutting the end off blunt makes it feel different. But the hair on your face is so much finer, like peach fuzz.
- How often do I have to do it? I do mine once a week, sometimes a little touch up mid week. In fact, I think I probably shave my face more often than my legs sometimes. 😂 #noshame
- Do I have to use the Tinkle Razor? No, you could also use a men’s razor, but I think that would be a lot harder to see what you’re doing and personally I think they are so darn sharp, I’d be terrified. Do NOT use a women’s razor, they are not face friendly!
- What about shaving cream? Nah, don’t do it. I shave my face dry – after I’ve cleansed it. Clean skin is a must. Some women prefer to use a facial oil (see number 04 below) first to lubricate the skin. I like to put the oil on after I’ve shaved dry.
- How many times can I use the Tinkle Razor? I only use mine 3-4 times, I find they start to blunt after that. Make sure you clean it in hot water and dry it with a clean towel after each use. You do not want to be scraping bacteria all over your face!
- Can I shave my whole face? I suggest you start with below the eyes. Cheeks, chin, upper line, neck are all fair game. As you can see in the video, Michelle does everywhere. I have tried my forehead and nose (because why not right?) for the exfoliation, but it’s a bit trickier, so get comfortable with the technique first. Stay away from your brows – one slip could be a disaster!
- When should I do it? I shave mine at night, after cleansing. I don’t like to put make up or anything but oils on it straight after.
- How do I actually do it?! I start like Michelle does in the video, just next to my ear. I pull my skin taut, and shave downwards in short strokes – keeping the razor blade at 45 degree angle against my face. The video below will show you in more details (and Michelle Money is hilarious AF in it).
Final thoughts on ladies shaving their face
If you have peach fuzz or hair anywhere on your face, and you don’t mind it – then totally leave it as is! Do what makes you happy girl!
But if you are keen to jump on the razor game, then just you wait.
First you’ll be shocked when you see how much peach fuzz comes off your face (you’ll feel like you’re shaving a small lamb) but then, THEN you’ll die with excitement about how smooth and soft your face is.
Trust me on this. You are going to LOVE this. (I feel like I’m saying “trust me” a lot – but seriously, just go with me on this!)
03 Apple Cider Vinegar Toner
Instead of a toner, I mix Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) with filtered water. I normally do about 40% ACV and 60% water, but test out what feels good on your skin. Here’s a general guide –
- Sensitive skin – 1 part ACV to 4 parts water
- Normal/dry skin – 1 part ACV to 2 parts water
- Oily skin – 1 part ACV to 1 part water
I like to just mix it up in a little travel bottle, and pop some on a cotton wool pad then swipe it over my face after oil cleansing or washing, or even after a face mask. Avoid your eye area, you don’t want this stuff in your eyes!
It’s so nice how smooth your skin feels after applying ACV. Plus I feel like it tightens up my pores and kind of plumps my skin up? It’s also great for balancing your skin’s natural pH and it’s antibacterial and antiseptic, so perfect for skin conditions like acne.
Note: If you have any broken skin on your face, like from a burst blemish – this will sting a little bit! But I find it’s literally for about a second, and then it’s fine.
Also, I have to say, it kind of smells a bit funky. So if that bothers you, let it dry after applying and then splash your face with some water – I don’t bother, as I find my oils cover it up mostly anyway.
You might find you like to use this daily, or every second day. If your skin gets too dry, cut down or dilute the ACV more.
Bonus – drinking ACV (mixed with water) is also great for your digestion and skin health from an internal perspective!
04 Facial Oils
I deliberately have not named a specific oil here, as it’s a bit of a personal match for your skin. However, there are three that I’m really liking and rotating between –
Jojoba oil – pronounced “ho-ho-ba”, this is a light oil that is very easily absorbed. It mimics your skin’s sebum so helps to trick it into producing less oil. I find it gives my skin a bit of a sheen, so I tend to only use this at night. I also use it as an oil cleanser and to remove make-up.
Argan oil – another great oil that is non comedogenic and because of the vitamin E in it, it helps reduce scarring from those breakouts. Just like jojoba oil, it actually helps decrease sebum production which is a win for those of us with that oily t-zone.
Hemp seed oil – make sure you store this in the fridge or it will go rancid! Hemp seed oil has a high level of linoleic acid, which is perfect as people with acne and oily skin have low levels of linoleic, which causes too much sebum production. It’s also a ‘dry’ oil, so doesn’t make your skin feel greasy or shiny at all.
Adding oil to the oily parts of your skin actually makes them less oily!
There are some other oils I do like, particularly rosehip oil … BUT if it’s not in a blend, it’s be a bit too heavy for my skin currently. However, rosehip oil is amazing at clearing up scars and skin discolouration, so one to keep in mind for when your breakouts are under control.
Another one to note, is an essential oil – tea tree oil is a fantastic antiseptic and great for popping on those blemishes before you cover them up with concealer OR under your Lerosett clay. If you pop a pimple or extract a blackhead yourself (don’t use your fingers! Get one of these) then tea tree oil is perfect to put on after to prevent the spread of bacteria.
You can of course also get some really nice oil blends – just avoid coconut oil on your face! It will definitely clog your pores, so leave those for the body. I’m loving this argan-jojoba-marracuja-rosehip blend from Sukin.
